The Law of Attraction – unveiled

Over the past few  years there has been so much hype (and frustration) surrounding the Law of Attraction. But to my way of thinking, it is not so much a “law” as it is a way of being. It is a healthy approach to getting out of your own way so you don’t get tangled up in the things that really aren’t important and you give yourself the freedom to head towards what is.

Let me explain.

Your thoughts are yours. They can be your faithful servants or your masters, which ever you allow them to be. In any given situation, you have the control, and you can make your choice. Now I will be the first to admit that it doesn’t always feel like this is true. None of us is perfect and we all have our “moments”. For example, you may be experiencing a day when there is a lot going on, you are running in 10 different directions, racing to make a deadline and the stress seems to be mounting with every minute that passes. Then, out of the blue, someone interrupts your “flow” by asking you to help them or to answer a question. You snap, and they get an earful.

In that moment, it is entirely possible that you feel like you are not in control. But truth be told, if you could pull yourself back together and look at it differently, you would be able to see that you actually made the decision to react that way. Now, please don’t get defensive with me and think “that is just a load of crap”, stay with me for a minute and let’s talk this through.

In every situation, whether it feels like it or not, you determine which course your thoughts take or how you are going to react. Your thoughts are nothing more than energy, and they will go and flow in the direction you send them. Positive thoughts usually bring on more positive thoughts, and negative thoughts most often bring on more negative thoughts.

Think about it.

In the situation above, maybe you woke up feeling a little bit grumpy and as you stumbled around getting ready for your day (already heavy with grumpy energy) you started to think about how much you had to do that day. Then what happens? You get a little grumpier because maybe you already know you have a lot to do. So your grumpiness starts to shift into overwhelm. And as you set about tackling the things you need to tackle, they don’t go smoothly. Enter frustration. You may wonder why you are having the day you are having, but probably don’t realize or remember that you started it off grumpy. So things don’t go easily, your day doesn’t run smoothly and worse—you are not in the right frame of mind to breeze past the little things that are now frustrating you. So the events of your day begin to compound themselves anger prevails, you snap then cycle back down into guilt, remorse and sadness. And this cycle doesn’t usually change until we make some sort of dramatic shift in how we are perceiving our experience, until we notice our thoughts and make a conscious effort to change them.

Truth be told we had the chance (at any moment really) but especially early, on to have done something to change the course of the day. But it is admittedly, not always easy to notice or listen to our thoughts. And this is where we need to become aware in order for the Law of Attraction to bring us what we truly desire. By not shifting out of the grumpy state we talked about above, the scenario above played out badly, but there are things that could have been done early on to have turned that day in a more positive direction. For example, you could have woken up, realized you were grumpy, and decided to do some quick breathing exercises to change your state—or done jumping jacks, gone for a quick jog, practiced a few yoga poses, Qi-Gong, or meditation, or even did some laughter yoga exercises while you showered. Anything positive works really, it is all just energy and your goal is reroute  your thoughts (the energy of them) in a positive direction. Our thoughts are very powerful and it is not until we learn to control them and use them in useful ways that we will gain the ability to create the lives that we want.

Take control of your thoughts

The way to get what you want through the Law of Attraction is learning to control your thought process. Negative thoughts produce as much energy as positive thoughts. If you’re producing more negative energy than positive, your results are going to be negative.

Thinking about your fears and saying “I don’t want that” is probably going to result in your fears being realized. Cosmic energy is literal. It doesn’t understand “I don’t want”, so you must reframe your desires in a positive way, talk and think about what you do want instead. For example, instead of saying “I am tired of being in debt”, or “I don’t want to be broke anymore”, say “I love money and money loves me” or “Money flows freely and easily to me”.

Most people are worriers by nature, and you must train your mind to concentrate on the positive instead of the negative is a necessary. It takes effort and attention to change your thoughts, but it can be done and the results will be well worth the effort. Try a little test. Notice your thoughts for an hour or a day and write down how many times you experienced a negative thought. (I think you will be surprised.) Then the next day, pay attention to your thoughts again, but this time, as a negative one comes up, replace it with a more positive one, or just let it go. Practice this for several days, each day paying more and more attention. The more you practice, the more control you will gain, and eventually, many of the negative thoughts will subside.

Negative thoughts are a survival instinct designed to help us remember and avoid the dangers of life. But being aware of our fears and letting them control our thoughts are two different things. Turning the negative fears into positive thoughts is the key.

Learning to control your thoughts can be done by learning to control your will. By mastering yourself. Phrases like “I am master of my self” can lead you in the right direction.

Repeating these or similar words, and believing them, will make them real. When confronted with fears and doubts, remembering to “master” your thoughts keeps the positive energy flowing. Leaving no room for the negative energy to manifest.

I will discuss creating positive affirmations a little later, but for today work on thinking positive! It is a big homework assignment, but one that is well worth it. Last night I heard a Chinuyu Lin talking about one way to change your energy. He said, “it is simple, just put a smile on your face.” And it is true! A smile or a laugh automatically changes the flow of energy in your body, and it works whether  you believe it or not. So, even if you don’t feel like doing it, do it anyway…and the next time a negative thought creeps into your head, chuckle at it and put a big smile on your face instead.
